IYASON, is a reggae artiste from the islands of Trinidad & Tobago. Formally, ‘JAH Son’ and also known as Randy Mc Millan he is a conscious reggae & dancehall recording artiste, song writer, composer and producer – promoting a message of truth, light, and love.
My Story:On a great day in the sun, on the beautiful island of Trinidad, a loving woman on June 26, 1974, give birth to a son who she named – Randy Jerome Mc Millan. Seven years later I was relocated to Tobago to grow up with my Grandparents in ‘country’ (Delaford – a rural community). Growing up ‘country’ gave me the experience I needed to spark my career in music. There I got to know my uncles, most of them being local musicians involved in many cultural activities on the island. Those growing moments shaped my talent as a song writer, composer and recording artiste.
My first formal education was at Delaford RC School then unto St. Joseph Convent, where I officially started my music career at age 17. But the ‘gift of music’ was all rooted in me from the age of 9 or 10. Being around my uncles’ sound system, gave me the creative musical foundation I needed and use today. Also Tobago is a place where the dialect and ‘spoken tongue’ is relatively similar to that of Jamaican, especially in the rural country-side. So the reggae genre was a perfect fit and I could identify with their culture, since our struggles are one and the same. Those struggles and lifestyles created an abundance of experience from which I draw content for my music. I refer to it as my ‘great preparation period’.
I later moved to Trinidad. Moving to Trinidad was a way of expressing my readiness for the world musically. There is where I met some of the top selectors of those days – Blackstone, Black Chariot, New Chapter, Lion King Sound and Matsemela… just to name a few. It was these selectors that gave me the platform I needed in the world of ‘Reggae Music’.
My first recording came in 1993 with a lable called P.M. & Fin – for Caribbean Sound Basin – Amar Entertainment, CSB’s parent company; owns two record companies and labels (Lamar for international music and Kisskidee for local and regional artistes). My first ‘Big Show’ was amongst artiste like Dennis Brown, Supercat, Fredlocks, Freddy McGregor and Mega Banton. In those growing years my sobriquet was ‘Chicken Chest’ (a name given to me by my school mates – because of my small slim physique and indeed, it stuck).
In 2006 due to my influence in ‘Rastafarianism’ and some of my conscious reggae songs like, ‘Things that you do’, ‘Mansion’ , ‘Dem Greedy’ , ‘No Disturbance’, and others, I decided that the name ‘JAH Son’ (JAH-son) was more appropriate for me as an artiste. This was personally life-changing and brought me personally as an artiste, through a spiritual journey and level of consciousness.
Some of my successful shows were amongst artiste like Ilaway, Warrior King, Anthony B, Luciano , Queen Ifrica, Gyptian, etc. It was indeed the cult of humility that gave me the stability to penetrate and associate with these regions reggae giants, musically. As a father, it has also given me an understanding and appreciation of ‘creating positive energies’, with humility, in knitting strong bonds within the fabric of my family. It takes a home to build a village – this is no joke. This is reflected in my music.
I am primarily a reggae artiste and song writer. My mission is to beautify the minds of people musically, for there is great hope with music, in liberating us from the slippery slopes and shackles of life. Music is a universal language, without boundaries and helps us to relate to our inner selves in diverse ways, to create freedom and liberation from the many levels of slavery. One of my most successful songs over the times, I think is – ‘No Disturbance’. Being an artiste is being myself, it is what I’ve become and it’s who I am.
The internet, social media, mobile phones and this warp-speed lifestyle has changed our entertainment landscape and our music forever. The old method of reaching out with a ‘bull-horn’ at the waysides, are no longer effective, so I created this website as a new medium to get my musical messages out globally.
My music is directed to socially disenfranchise people all over the world. Not only is it leisurely edifying music, intended to bring a balance from the everyday hardships of life, but it is also rooted in truth, light and love.
Today is a new awaking. My musical journey as ‘Jah Son’ (JAH-son) has now evolved to ‘IYASON’ – (I-YAH-son), this is a new rising… Come, listen and rise with me.
Our Mission
Mission Statement
My mission is to beautify the minds of people musically, for there is great hope with music, in liberating us from the slippery slopes and shackles of life. Music is a universal language, without boundaries and helps us to relate to our inner selves in diverse ways, to create freedom and liberation from the many levels of slavery.
Our Vision
This music is for the socially disenfranchised all over the world. Not only is it leisurely edifying music, intended to bring a balance from the many hardships of life, but it’s also rooted in truth, light and love. I want to use music to transcend boundaries created by economic hardship and pressures of social displacement felt by all people.
Our Values
The culture values of reggae music shines on all people, both rich and poor. Many musicians used reggae music as a form of protest music, reflecting the pains of social and political injustices. My reggae music is inter-woven with integrity, positivity and a message of hope relying on a relationship between the ‘Creator’ and the created.
